Visit Lyceum, A Bookstore In Nebraska That Sells Food, Art, And Gifts

Sometimes the smallest towns hold the biggest surprises. Brownville, Nebraska – located about an hour south of Omaha and right on the NE/MO border, is quite small but full of terrific destinations. Several museums and shops line the main (and only) street, and there’s one you’ll want to make sure to visit.

Welcome to the Lyceum in Brownville, Nebraska! The tiny village of just 132 residents is the site of the wildly popular twice-annual Brownville Flea Market, but it has a lot to offer the rest of the year as well.

Believe it or not, this itty-bitty place is actually home to several bookstores. The Lyceum, however, is the only one that also serves food.

When you walk in, you'll be greeted with a space that's just about as friendly and welcoming as it gets.

Before you sit down for a delicious meal, take a little time to explore the books and other items for sale. The selection is larger than you may expect for a store that's also a cafe.

In addition to used books of every genre and description, the Lyceum carries a selection of quirky accessories, greeting cards, and gifts.

Local artists display their work here on the walls, as well. Be sure to take a lap around the inside and look at all of the current displays.

After you've scratched your shopping itch and picked up some fun gifts and a new (to you) book, grab a table in the dining area.

The food is a lot like what you'd expect to find if you went back home for a family meal. Fresh cinnamon rolls with perfectly sweet icing are a terrific snack if you're not feeling up to an entire meal.

If you're a little hungrier, though, order up a tasty home-cooked meal. The menu isn't large, but everything on it is hearty and delicious.

Stop in on a cold day to warm up with a cup of tomato bisque soup while you read or talk with friends.

The desserts are always yummy. If you're afraid that you won't have room for a slice of pie or other treat after your meal, go ahead and eat dessert first. No one's going to judge.
