The Capitol District is a mixed-use area just outside of Omaha's Old Market. Featuring bars, restaurants, offices, apartments, and an open-air town square, the Capitol District is a destination for residents and visitors alike.
This year, the Capitol District courtyard will look a little different than it has in previous winters. Instead of the typical ice skating rink, the courtyard is hosting eight private igloos.
Occupying the open area that is typically turned into an ice skating rink in the winter, the eight transparent igloos each seat up to six guests.
The plastic bubbles offer a socially-distant way to get out and enjoy a meal with less Covid-19 risk than dining in a traditional restaurant dining room.
Each igloo comes with several chairs, a small heater, and some blankets. Everything is cleaned and disinfected between parties to cut down on the risk of coronavirus transmission.
You can also borrow some fun extras for the experience, like portable DVD players, board games, extra blankets and pillows, and flatware for a meal.
Outside food isn't allowed, but the town square is surrounded by some truly great restaurants. Order a meal from one of them (be sure to ask about their "igloo specials") and bring it back to your cozy bubble to eat.
Or how about a festive round of drinks in this life-size snow globe? Capitol District bars are also getting into the spirit with drink specials.
Please note that there are no servers and Capitol District staff members aren't allowed to enter the igloos due to the infection risk.
Occupancy of each igloo is limited to six people in accordance with CDC guidelines. To review all of the COVID precautions that the Capitol District is taking, follow this link.
