Carson was born in Iowa but spent his formative years in Norfolk, a town that honors his influence to this day. The annual Great American Comedy Festival is the ultimate tribute, but not many people know that it happens right here in Nebraska.
The festival was founded in 2008 to honor the memory of Johnny Carson. It's held in mid-June, and it gets bigger and funnier every year.
As you might expect, the Great American Comedy Festival is full of hilarious performances. Comics - from the immensely popular to those just starting out - come from all over to perform for the crowds.
It's an important event for the city of Norfolk each year, bringing in lots of tourist dollars. But more importantly, the festival produces tons of smiles.
Shows take place in several venues throughout Norfolk, including the Johnny Carson Theatre, Elkhorn Valley Museum, Norfolk Arts Center, and Divots Conference Center.
