As much as we enjoy the bright, sunny colors of summer, we’re suckers for the rich golds and reds of autumn. Nebraska certainly isn’t the first place people think of when they’re looking for a place to view the fall foliage, but our state has plenty of breathtaking autumn sights to see! If you’re looking forward to going out to catch the colors at their most vivid, check out the interactive map from SmokyMountains.com. It will tell you when the foliage will be at its peak beauty this year.
We'll start to see changes in most of the state in about a week. The week of October 12 will bring partial changes to western, northern, and west-central Nebraska, while central Nebraska will still feature only patchy changes.
This would be a great time to visit Schramm Park in eastern Nebraska. It's located in a wooded setting that's absolutely beautiful any time of the year, but turns especially scenic in the fall.
The following week, beginning October 19, will continue to bring more colorful changes to the entire state. That week will see western, northern, and eastern Nebraska reaching near-peak foliage, while most of central Nebraska will see partial foliage changes.
Indian Cave State Park in the southeastern corner of the state is a spectacular place to see the colorful autumn leaves. Take a little stroll out to the overlook point and you'll be treated to a breathtaking view of the Missouri River Valley and its lush wooded expanses.
The week of October 26th will bring peak colors to western, northern, and eastern Nebraska, while central Nebraska will be nearing peak foliage. The rest of the state will be nearing its peak, so this would be a great week to take a road trip to see some of the prettiest leaves.
The Niobrara River Valley will explode with color around this time. You can see it from tons of beautiful places in northern Nebraska, but viewing the trees from a canoe on the river is absolutely magical.
By the week of November 2nd, much of central Nebraska will be at peak foliage while the rest of the state is a little past its peak. Don't worry, though - "past peak" just means that the leaves are falling and creating colorful autumn blankets.
Taking a day trip on Heritage Byway, Highway 136, is a fabulous way to experience not only the fall colors, but tons of terrific small towns. Stretching through 10 counties and running from Edison in the West to Brownville in the east, the byway covers more than 200 miles. Much of that distance features trees showing off their brilliant colors.
