This One Easy Hike In Nebraska Will Lead You Someplace Unforgettable

When you think about hiking, do you picture heavy socks and boots, massive backpacks, and the kind of intimidating walking sticks that seasoned trail walkers seem to favor? Nebraska has plenty of trails that appeal to the hardened hiker, but there are many more that the casual nature walker can enjoy. One of the most spectacular is the short hike leading up to Nebraska’s tallest waterfall.

About 15 minutes outside of Valentine, Smith Falls State Park is the newest addition to the Nebraska State Parks system. The park is home to Smith Falls, the 70-foot-high waterfall that people travel many miles to see.

The falls are only accessible after a short hike over the historic Verdigre iron truss bridge that crosses the scenic Niobrara River. After the bridge, you'll trek across a grassy field until you come to the wooden boardwalk.

The boardwalk takes you right up to the waterfall. A set of stairs lead down to the floor of the canyon so you can even step under the very cold water if you're brave.

Smith Falls has often been referred to as one of the most beautiful, romantic spots in the state. It's definitely worth the short, easy hike to get there from your car. If you want to continue your walk, a short nature trail continues on the south side of the river for just over a mile.
