Although we’ve all got our own personal tastes and preferences, there are a few things that it seems the majority of Nebraskans can agree on. These are some of the things that (most) Nebraskans just can’t live without.
12. Our cars and trucks.
Some people treat their vehicle like it's their baby out of a sense of pride. But from a more practical standpoint, it's nearly impossible to get around in Nebraska without driving.
11. Chili with cinnamon rolls.
The rest of the country thinks we're weird for eating these together. The rest of the country has clearly never tried the amazing combination of sweet cinnamon pastry with hearty, slightly spicy chili.
10. College football.
We love the Huskers SO much that most of us refuse to miss a game. But when there isn't a Husker game on, we're okay with watching pro football, too.
9. Summer thunderstorms.
We quite literally can't live without the rain they bring...but we just wouldn't want to live without the excitement and splendor of the summer thunderstorms.
8. Wide open spaces.
Cities are great for a lot of reasons. But there's nothing quite like looking at a horizon that's miles and miles away and unhindered by anything more than the odd tree or barn.
7. Our legendary Nebraska sunrises and sunsets.
Other states love to claim that their sunrises and sunsets are the most beautiful in the country, but we know the truth: it doesn't get better than in Nebraska.
6. Community.
Community means different things to different people. It can be your neighbors, the people you work with, your church family, or the community of friends you make throughout life. However you define the word, Nebraskans are big on tight-knit communities.
5. Friends.
We tend to make friends easily (it's that innate Nebraska friendliness, you see) and keep them for life. They become our secondary support system.
4. Family.
These guys are our primary support system...not to mention our first friends, our closest confidants, and the people who are first to come running when we need help.
3. Fresh air and outdoor activities.
I have yet to meet a Nebraskan who really hates the outdoors. Even those who call themselves lazy have at least one outdoor thing they can't do without, whether it's fishing, hunting, or just tooling around in the garden.
2. Locally grown food.
It isn't because we're trying to be trendy. It's simply because this is how we've done things for generations now. We eat fruits and vegetables from our own backyards or our neighbors' gardens and fields. We eat fish we catch ourselves and beef grown right here in Nebraska...because the foods grown near us are so much more delicious than the bland food in the grocery store.
1. Our state pride.
If you've ever read any of the comments on this site...or if you've ever talked to a lifelong Nebraska resident...you know that we'll tirelessly stick up for our state and our towns. It's endearing, and it's one of the things that make us unique.
