September 2nd was declared to be Victory over Japan Day - or as it's more commonly known, VJ Day. Impromptu celebrations popped up all over the country as the news reached the papers. The war was over, and that was something worth celebrating.

In North Platte, servicemen and other people jumped onto the hoods of cars and rode around the streets, shouting and celebrating. Kids lit off fireworks, and everyone waved their newspapers announcing the historic day.

It was a day of jubiliation for everyone. A weight seems to have been lifted from the shoulders of those in this short film, and their absolute joy is evident in their faces.
