Blue Mounds State Park is located on the largest hill in southern Wisconsin. To begin the hike you’ll park on top of it, in a parking are near the Flint Rock Nature Trail trailhead. The trail starts near a grassy field.
The hike will take you about two miles; if you want more of a challenge, the trail connects to other longer and steeper hikes in the park.
The Flint Rock Nature Trail will take you to some rocky outcroppings and a steep section of trail that includes some steps.
The end of the trail will take you to the base of the park’s West Tower. While you might be tired from the hike, it’s worth making the effort to climb to the top.
The tower has amazing views of the Driftless Area. You can see for miles from the top of the tower. There’s little light pollution out here so it’s also a nice spot for stargazing.
Blue Mounds State Park has over 20 miles of trails for hiking, off-road biking and cross-country skiing so there’s a lot more to explore. It’s open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., year-round.
