If you're looking to take a walk in the woods, West Virginia has no shortage of fantastic state parks and natural areas to explore. One of the largest is the Monongahela National Forest which protects over 921,000 acres creating an unspoiled woodland with 825 miles of trails. Today's forest hike takes you on a three-mile loop through this Mountain State gem to one of the most beautiful spots in the state. Ready to get started? Lace-up those hiking boots, we've got plenty of ground to cover!
Seneca Rocks is an incredible natural landmark located within the Monongahela National Forest. Chances are you may have been to visit this magnificent rock formation that rises 900 feet above the North Fork River.
With such an astounding end goal when jumping on the trail, we sometimes forget to enjoy the journey. The Seneca Rocks Trail is just over three miles and winds through the very beautiful and remarkable forest.
You might think that the hike is going to be difficult as you gaze at the rocks in the distance. Surprisingly with gently sloping hills and switchbacks, this forest hike is much easier than it first appears.
Most of the Monongahela National Forest is second-growth forest sprouting up after having been harvested in the early 20th century. You'll find a lush canopy of spruce, fir, ash, and others overhead as you travel along the trail.
Cross two different bridges along the way getting a bird's eye view of both Seneca Creek and a fork of the Potomac.
As you walk through the forest, overall, you'll gain about 1,000 feet in elevation on your hike. But it certainly doesn't feel like it on this gentle trail.
At the tippy-top of the Seneca Rocks Trail, you'll reach an observation platform. Situated on the side of the cliff, this perch will make you feel like you're sitting on top of the world!
The views stretch on for miles and miles offering up West Virginia's phenomenal landscape. Take some time to soak it all in and snap as many pictures as you can of this extraordinary sight.
What comes up must go back down. When you're done taking in the scenery, enjoy the return trip back through the forest.
To embark on this enchanting forest hike, you'll want to start at the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center. Address: WV-28, Seneca Rocks, WV 26884.
