Those who haven't spent much time in Virginia are often surprised by the diversity of landscapes you can find here. In addition to the well-known coast and mountains, Virginia has an impressive array of nearly otherworldly sites. One example is a trail that meanders through Westmoreland State Park. With its sandy, riverfront shoreline and striking cliffs, the park is frequented by many visitors throughout the year. Yet few people have ventured into the woods, where a jungle-like setting awaits. So load up on the bug spray and prepare yourself for a nature-filled adventure you won't soon forget.
There's a lot to love about Westmoreland State Park. Positioned along the Potomac River, this stretch of waterfront landscape almost feels beach-like.
But the shoreline is just the beginning; there are over 1,300 acres of wooded forests to explore, too. The seven trails, one of which is a self-guided interpretive trail, offer a fascinating perspective of nature.
Looking for a real adventure? The Beach Trail meanders along the riverbanks and deep into the forest, where the abundant ferns and greenery will make you feel like you've landed in the jungle.
You'll find that the trail is well-marked, so you won't worry about losing track of where you are.
The Beach Trail is only .9 miles, but you can continue your hiking excursion by linking up with one of the other many trails in the park.
From secluded forest to big open sky, this breathtaking state park offers such a variety of perspectives.
Have you visited Westmoreland State Park lately? If so, we'd love to hear all about your experience there! For more information, be sure to visit the official Virginia State Park website. And while you're at Westmoreland, you can also hunt for fossils right there on the beach.
