Located two hours northwest of Austin, Colorado Bend State Park is such an underrated destination. 35 miles of multipurpose trails, including one that leads to the iconic Gorman Falls, plus cave tours and a river perfect for paddling make it a bucket list-worthy natural wonder.
Other areas of the park often get overlooked, including Spicewood Springs Trail. This unassuming hike is nothing special at the outset, but if you see it through to the end, breathtaking views await.
At Spicewood Springs in Texas, you'll encounter several water crossings along the 3.8-mile journey, so make sure to wear shoes with sufficient grip. If you have small children, this may not be the best trail as it's easy to slip on the rocks.
At the end, you'll come upon a magical oasis surrounded by lush greenery. Numerous waterfalls cascade into the pristine, crystal-clear pool, mentally transporting you to a faraway tropical paradise.
After trekking through the Texas heat, nothing feels better than taking a dip in this enchanting grotto. Bring a snack to enjoy by the water, or simply close your eyes and let the meditative trickle elevate you into a state of transcendence.
Many hikers prefer to start on the Spicewood Canyon Trail, ascending first before looping back down to the springs trail. This allows for two different perspectives: awe-inspiring scenic overlooks that essentially showcase the entire Hill Country landscape, and jungle-like swimming holes that refresh and rejuvenate.
There are nearly 50 campsites at Spicewood Springs in Texas, so feel free to extend your stay overnight. Both primitive tent and RV, as well as group sites are scattered in different areas, with varying amenities depending on which type you select.
