Of all the state parks in Texas (89, to be exact!), Lake Corpus Christi State Park in Mathis is one of the oldest. It was built 90 years ago - in the midst of the Great Depression - and time has only made it more beloved among locals and visitors alike.

Celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2024, Lake Corpus Christi State Park is an enduring icon in the South Texas community that continues to be just as (if not more!) popular today than it was nearly a century ago.

The 356-acre park first opened in 1934 after the State of Texas leased the property from the City of Corpus Christi.

Hardworking members of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built the park on a cove of Lake Corpus Christi, an artificial body of water on the Nueces River created as part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. The CCC constructed three buildings within the park: a bathhouse, a park residence and a refectory; only the latter remains standing to this day.

Understandably, the lake is the park's main draw. It spans over 18,000 acres and offers top-notch swimming, boating, fishing, paddling, and water skiing opportunities.

There are two lighted fishing piers in the park, one of which is wheelchair-accessible. Anglers can expect to catch largemouth and white bass, crappie, blue, channel and flathead catfish, and bluegill and redear sunfish.

Guests also have access to two boat ramps and two fish cleaning stations.

Placid as the lake's waters are, even families with small children can enjoy water recreation activities without hesitation.

Sometimes, one day simply doesn't cut it when it comes to visiting a Texas state park.
