I don't know about you, but I never get tired of seeking out hidden gems in the Lone Star State. One of my favorite recent discoveries is the Sabal Palm Sanctuary in Brownsville, Texas. This magical old-growth forest is one of the last of its kind in America, and it's a lush oasis worth visiting.
Located just steps away from the U.S.-Mexico border along the Rio Grande, the Sabal Palm Sanctuary is a 557-acre nature reserve that protects one of the last-remaining vestiges of old-growth Sabal Palm forest in America.
One of the rarest ecosystems in the country, this subtropical oasis once spanned over 60,000 acres, fewer than 30 of which still stand today.
Over three miles of scenic trails wind through the lush landscape, allowing visitors to stroll through the palm forest and walk alongside the mighty Rio Grande.
There are wetland boardwalks as well as observation decks that provides unparalleled views of the area's native flora and fauna.
Speaking of flora and fauna, the preserve is home to a number of rare and endangered plant and animal species. You'll see various snakes, insects, big cats, and hear the majestic call of the Great Horned Owl.
The sanctuary is a wonderful place to enjoy some peace and quiet. Nothing compares to watching the calm and tranquil waters of the Rio Grande gently ripple as the wind blows.
Also on the property is the historic Rabb Plantation home, which was built in 1892 and recently restored.
The 4,000-square-foot home is one of the last-remaining historic river plantations in the area, and it now serves as a vacation rental home!
Visit the Sabal Palm Sanctuary website or Sabal Palm Sanctuary Facebook page for more information, including current hours and entrance fees.
