There are tons of waterfalls all over Texas that are easy to get to and quite pretty. If you really want the most scenic places, you've got to get out into the depths of nature and find nature's secrets. Cattail Falls is such a place. With colorful rocks and moss, this hidden gem is well worth the effort it takes to get there. It's a welcome respite from the surrounding desert.
Starting from Chisos Basin Campground, the trailhead is marked by this sprawling tree. Lush green in the spring and golden in the fall, it's quite the landmark to start off this trail.
Make sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen as you'll be hiking about five miles each way through the desert. Thankfully, the trail itself is an easy walk.
As you get closer, you start seeing more green foliage and a bit of water in the little creek. You know refreshing waters are not far off now!
The waterfall is a lovely sight and a wonderful way to cool down after that hot hike through the desert. While you can cool off here, swimming is discouraged.
If you stand under the falls, you can get a view of the pool below. It's a lovely little oasis in the middle of a huge Texas desert.
Cattail Falls is located in Big Bend National Park in Southwestern Texas. It might be worth an early start to beat the hottest part of the day. If you'd like to stay near the trail, the Chisos Mountain Lodge is right there! The park has a ton of wonderful places to explore, such as the Lost Mine Trail and hike through some cloud-like fog if you're lucky.
