It seems like Texas is constantly giving us new places to explore, some of which have been hiding right under our noses for far too long. Mother Neff State Park is one such destination, having been the very first established state park in Texas.
Mother Neff State Park officially opened to the public in 1937, its initial six acres donated by Isabella Eleanor Neff. The additional land was deeded by her daughter, Governor Pat Morris Neff, and Mr. Frank Smith.
Company 817 of the Civilian Conservation Corps built the park from 1934 to 1938, using quarried stone and chopped wood to create structures like this observation tower. Climb the steps and get a bird's-eye view of the landscape!
This park is a place where nature lovers come to unwind. Picnicking, hiking 3.5 miles of trails, geocaching, and camping are just some of the activities your family can enjoy.
From novice to expert, all skill levels can adventure to their heart's content. Uniquely-shaped trees and other interesting flora, vibrant wildflowers, and so many more breathtaking sights are just waiting to be discovered.
One of the most brilliant natural features at Mother Neff is this cave used by the Tonkawa Indian tribe two centuries ago. You can actually walk underneath and try to imagine what life was like for some of the park's first inhabitants.
You'll also encounter a gorgeous Wash Pond with water so pristine, it sparkles in the sunlight. Surrounded by lush greenery, this is a picture-perfect scene if we've ever laid eyes on one.
So whether you're a history buff, hiking enthusiast, or just love spending time outdoors, this timeless place is truly worth a visit. Feel free to extend your stay overnight -- the new camping loop has 20 full hookup and 15 tent sites, plus a lodge.
