The town gains its name from the series of small waterfalls viewable from the heart of the village. "Pawtuxet" means Little Falls in the language used by the natives of this section of the state.

Dating back to 1638, Pawtuxet Village is one of America’s oldest settlements and is full of history. The town itself was established hundreds of years ago and was once a major shipping port as well as a mill village.
The American Revolution was said to have started here, and it also served as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War.
The town hosts countless events every year celebrating this history, but there is no event more popular than Gaspee Days, pictured above.
