Hiking is such a great way to explore your surrounding and discover parts of your state you may never have known existed before. You get fresh air, exercise, and beautiful views, as well as a great opportunity to catch up with loved ones in the outdoors. The only thing that could make hiking more fun is having a goal in mind, like looking out for interesting (and maybe even edible) fungi! This trail in Providence is the perfect place to do just that.
Neutaconkanut Park is conveniently located right in Providence, and provides a lovely reprieve from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The trail itself is 1.7 miles long, and suitable for all ages and abilities.
It is also a convenient loop so you won't have to do any backtracking while you admire all the park has to offer.
Or course, what we are talking about today is mushrooms, and boy does this trail have them!
We insist you do your research before interacting with any mushrooms, as fungi can be tricky, but even just admiring them from afar can be a sport in itself. Make sure to bring your camera to snag some pictures.
If you're more well versed in mushrooms, you can keep an eye out for edible types like chicken of the woods and honey mushrooms.
Or if you're a burgeoning artist, you can collect safe mushrooms to dip in ink or paint and make spore prints. A very fun activity for all ages (so long as you know which mushrooms are safe to interact with.)
This trail has lots of natural beauty to take in, as well as fabulous views of the city, but you might see things you didn't expect if you look to the ground!
Are you excited to look out for funky mushrooms along this charming trail? It seems like an great way to get into nature without having to leave the city. If you want to learn more about mushroom foraging in Rhode Island, this website is a great place to start.
