In some states, hiking is a seasonal activity. But here in Rhode Island, it's a year-round adventure. Our beautiful Block Island is certainly quieter in some seasons than others, but that happens to be where you'll find some of Rhody's best trails. For some of the best Block Island views, treat yourself to a trek down the Clay Head Nature Trail.
To find the Clay Head Trail, look for a post marker on the right side of Corn Neck Road about three miles from downtown New Shoreham.
You'll see signs, but you'll know you've arrived when you see a big yellow farmhouse across the street.
This is a 3.5-mile fairly easy to navigate trail, great for beginners and expert hikers alike.
The trail is family friendly, and leashed dogs are also welcome.
The path leads you through the trees, down a winding path, and straight to the soft ocean breeze.
You'll be at the top of the bluffs in no time.
The ocean views are what truly make this trail spectacular.
And listening to the soothing sound of the waves crashing means you'll never need a hiking playlist.
At the top of the trail is what locals call “the maze”, a series of interconnected, unmarked paths where you can wander as much as you'd like.
With the ocean as your marker, you'll never get lost.
The Clay Head Trail is part of a Nature Conservancy, so you just might spot some migratory songbirds on your hike.
Early fall is definitely the best time to try and see them.
The next time you visit Block Island, block out an afternoon to explore this beautiful trail.
The picturesque bluffs and the sounds of the ocean will completely relax you.
Have you ever hiked this beautiful nature trail?
