For many, the day after Thanksgiving is a day of rest. For others, it is a day for shopping. In Portland, like many other places, it signifies the start of the holiday season. There is no better way to kick off the season than to attend the annual tree lighting ceremony downtown. This fun event will get you in the holiday state of mind, and you can participate in the community's largest sing-along to kick it all off.
The massive tree, a 75-foot pine from the Stimson Lumber Company, is the centerpiece attraction of the evening.
This community event, in its 33rd year, takes place in Pioneer Courthouse Square.
Dubbed Portland's living room, Pioneer Square is the perfect location for this community event that serves as a wonderful gathering of people from all over the city.
This year Thomas Lauderdale and members of Pink Martini will lead the event in singing along to Christmas classics.
The NW Community Gospel Choir and Pacific Youth Choir will also join the stage for this festive event.
The awaited event of the night though is the tree lighting.
Decked out with over 14,000 lights, the towering tree is a sight to behold.
Come for the lighting, but stay for the entertainment.
This family event is bound to get you dancing. Be sure to bundle up and wear a rain jacket this year, as the weather is predicted to be wet this Friday.
The event kicks off and 5:30 pm when darkness falls.
Be sure to plan ahead to get there on time, as it is generally quite crowded. If possible, take public transportation to avoid the congestion.

Word has it that even Santa will be there spreading holiday cheer and handing out candy canes for all the good little boys and girls.
