There is nothing quite like wading (or jumping) into a cool, refreshing river. Lucky for us residents of the Beaver State, Oregon boasts many wonderful options for beautiful, swimmable river beaches, from the Columbia River in Hood River to the Deschutes River in Bend. And on a warm, sunny day you're sure to find lots of like-minded folks playing in the water or hanging out along the shore. However, crowds can sometimes damper the fun.
Thankfully, there are still plenty of peaceful, lesser-known spots to discover, particularly if you don't mind (and are able) to trek a bit to get there. Case and point, a lovely swimming spot along the Sandy River that my friends and I call Secret Beach. Well, the secret's out! We invite you to escape the crowds for a lovely, tranquil swim. The best part is that you won't even need to go too far from a more popular river beach in order to get there. Simply take a 15 to 30-minute hike from Dodge Park to arrive at this relatively remote and peaceful beach along the Sandy River.
The hike to this peaceful, secluded swimming spot can't be beat!
This path is suitable for young children on up. However, you will need to be comfortable on your feet and able to handle small hills. It's not stroller-friendly.
The journey should take about 15 to 30 minutes depending on your pace.
From the Dodge Park parking lot, cross over the bridge then take a left along the gravel road into the forest. When you come to a fork in the path, turn left.
The path narrows and snakes back and forth a bit. Keep going until it opens up above the sandy river beach. From there, you can climb down to the beach. I usually keep following the path until it winds back around and down to the shore.
Cool, crystal-clear water awaits in this natural swimming pool.
Surrounded by trees, the reflection of the leaves turns this gorgeous, hidden swim spot an enchanting emerald green.
You'll likely have the water to yourself! There's also plenty of room on the wide beach for relaxing, digging, and picnicking.
Kids, from teenagers to little ones, will enjoy swimming at this beach. The gentle current is perfect for floating in inner tubes as well.
Just be sure to have swimmers wear life jackets and keep a close watch on children (and adults) in the water.
This secluded river beach along the banks of the Sandy River beckons.
