Everyone could use a break from these triple-digit temperatures in Oklahoma and one of the best places to cool down is in a swimming hole. We have about a dozen to choose from in the state and one of them is a man-made swimming hole at Gage Artesian Beach. This place looks like a giant swimming pool but it's actually filled with mineral water and has a sandy bottom. It's the most unique swimming hole in the state and a visit here will make you feel like a kid on summer vacation.
Welcome to Gage Artesian Beach, Oklahoma's largest outdoor swimming pool! It's located in northwest Oklahoma about a half mile east of the town of Gage.
Over 100 years ago the owner of the land was drilling for oil and accidentally discovered an artesian well instead. The water created a lake and the owner opened it to the public for swimming.
Then a swimming pool was created with cement sides so there was a dedicated swimming area. The bottom has sand and you might even find a fish or two swimming in the pool.
The pool water is cold and there is a slide and diving board. Many people visit the pool just for its healing powers since it is mineral water.
The price of admission is only $2 per person, so it's very affordable for the whole family. There is also a concession stand that offers food and drinks. The pool is open seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. You can visit any day of the weekend between the hours of 1:00-6:00 p.m.
You'll find two lifeguards on duty during pool hours, so it's nice knowing there are extra sets of eyes on the kids. The pool depth ranges from 3 feet to 14 feet and flotation devices are allowed.
Right next to the pool is a lake area that is also open to the public. The water is very clear and offers a more wide open space for swimming. But, the man-made swimming hole is often the preferred choice! The next time you're looking to take a road trip, head west to Gage and check out this local gem.
