From the vast, wide open prairies to the rugged badlands, North Dakota is full of natural beauty. It doesn't get much prettier, however, than the painted canyons in the west. This particular spot draws in hundreds of visitors who want to get a glimpse of one of the most gorgeous sights in the Peace Garden State. This particular view already looks amazing in pictures, but you have to see it in person to understand how simply breathtaking it is.
The badlands of North Dakota are a beautiful sight, especially at certain points where the canyon walls stand tall around the deep valley of the Little Missouri River.
The River Bend Overlook in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park's North Unit near Watford City, ND, is one of the very best spots to see this place.
This panoramic view of the river and the unique hills is second to none and will take your breath away.
No matter what time of year, whether the native prairie grasses and tree groves are bring and green or shifting in color, or if a layer of snow highlights the shape of the land, this spot is incredible.
One of the best parts of this valley spot is the visibility of the "painted" canyons right by the overlook.
You can see the colorful layers of sediment, revealed after hundreds of years of natural erosion, give them that name.
The view is truly tremendous at this canyon and it is one you need to experience in person to fully appreciate. One of North Dakota's gems, for sure!
