There are numerous places in North Carolina in which to spot a ghost (if you're into that sort of adventure seeking). Here are eight of the best spots to encounter spirits from the past here in the Tar Heel State. But there's also an unusual and very public place where people regularly claim to see ghosts, and the location along with its backstory may surprise you...
In downtown Asheville, there's a small park wedged into a triangular green space in the convergence of three roads: Patton Avenue, College Street, and Haywood Street.
Now, Asheville is certainly no stranger to hauntings. There are numerous places in the city to spot a ghost.
By day, Pritchard Park is a popular neighborhood meeting place. Various benches, stoops, shade trees, and even this permanent checker board are often filled with those enjoying a bit of nature plopped into the concrete on this block.
It's also roomier than one would think. And the sunken circle is known for hosting community events, like drum circles, small festivals, and other minor music events.
The apparitions frequently spotted at Pritchard Park often stir up a bit of a controversy.
That's because most people say they see the spirits of Confederate soldiers lingering here, either sitting casually on the benches, or wandering aimlessly around the space late at night.
Most people hear a version of history that says during the Civil War Pritchard Park was a staging area for the Confederate Army. However...
Historians refute the claim and have traced the property back to the Civil War era when it was a hog wallow for a nearby well-traveled turnpike. After that, a post office was built on the site in the late 1800s. In other words, it reportedly was never used as a staging area for Confederate soldiers.
Why the ghosts of Confederate soldiers seem to linger in this park is as big a mystery as the Brown Mountain Lights over off the Blue Ridge Parkway. We may never know.
Have you seen (or heard) the spirits of the Confederate soldiers in Asheville's Pritchard Park? We'd love to know...
