Thanksgiving and Christmas have come and gone again, and now is the time to get our things in order for a brand new year. Every New Year's Day, six of the Nebraska State Parks host wintery hikes to ring in the new year. These First Day Hikes vary in length, difficulty, and setting, but we think that one of the most impressive is the Steamboat Loop Trail at Chadron State Park.
The Steamboat Loop Trail begins at the Sawmill Shelter and makes a 1.4-mile loop that goes up to and then past Steamboat Butte.
If you haven't seen Steamboat Butte, the hike is more than worth it for that awesome sight alone.
The trail skirts the canyon in some places and passes by steep rock walls in others.
The views here are absolutely magnificent. You'll want to bring a camera - or leave the electronics and home and just make memories that will last you forever.
The way through is hugged by ponderosa pines, cottonwoods, and ash trees.
The forest fires of 2012 did considerable damage to this area, but it has slowly and steadily been regaining its former splendor thanks to the hard work of many groups and individuals. Pictured above is Chadron State Park in 2011, before the fires.
The First Day Hike will be led by Nebraska State Parks staff and you'll get a nice history of the area as well as information about the flora and fauna.
After the hike, the group will gather back at the Sawmill Shelter for hot chocolate and cookies.
Although the trail is rated easy-moderate, it may be difficult for those pushing strollers. Leashed dogs are welcome. Be sure to dress for the weather and be prepared for possible slippery or icy ground.
The group will meet at the shelter on January 1st, 2017 at 1:00 pm. There is no fee to attend the hike, but you do have to have a parks permit to get into the park. More information about the hike is here, and information about other state park First Day Hikes can be found on their calendar here.
