Just thirty minutes north of downtown St. Louis, located on the Missouri River is Belle Fontaine Park.
This park is full of amazing history and is a great place to explore nature close to the city.
Although no longer standing, Fort Bellefontaine was erected in 1805.
It was the first United States military installation west of the Mississippi River.
The site was important due to its proximity to both the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.
In 1806, Lewis and Clark visited the now Fort Bellefontaine haunted fort during the last remaining days of their expedition.
The fort fell into disrepair and by the 1930's the city of St. Louis had taken control of the property.
The property was then developed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the WPA constructed many of the stone structures that now stand, although beautifully deserted. As a result, it has become one of the most interesting Missouri haunted places.
These stunning ruins can be seen along the Fort Bellefontaine Loop Trail.
This trail is 3 miles long and rated as far as Missouri hikes are concerned, is rated moderate in difficulty.
Although the trail is typically pretty busy on nice days, many visitors believe that the park is haunted by a former solider.
This ghostly figure appears as a red mist at dusk on the stone stairs. Over the years, visitors continue to report strange sights and sounds near the staircase of this haunted Missouri site.
Whether you visit Fort Belle Fontaine Park for the history, the beauty, or for the ghosts, you're sure to have a great trip.
