Mississippi is full of magical places – and Bailey’s Woods Trail is one of them. Short and sweet, the round trip hike takes about 40 minutes to complete. And while it may be lacking in miles, it’s not lacking in much else. Take a look:
Bailey’s Woods Trail is an out-and-back trail in Oxford, which runs from the University of Mississippi Museum to Rowan Oak, the former home of William Faulkner.
A nice surprise in the middle of town, the trail leads through a patch forest – but not just any forest.
Years ago, William Faulkner commonly trekked through the forested area and even drew inspiration from Bailey’s Woods for his writing.
Relatively flat and just 0.6 miles each way, Bailey’s Woods Trail is suitable for hikers of all ages and skill levels. It’s even dog friendly, so the whole family can take part in the hike.
Though mostly primitive, the trail does include a few boardwalk sections and a bridge.
An enchanting trek to say the least, it’s surreal to think you can take the same path carved out by literary legend William Faulkner. The trail’s loaded with more than history, though. There’s also vibrant greenery and wildflowers.
The short trail eventually comes to an end at William Faulkner's former home. As an added bonus, you can explore the grounds surrounding the historic home for free.
There'a a $5 admission to tour the interior of the home, which should definitely be seen at least once.
Between the enchanting surroundings and incredible history, this has got to be one of the state's most unique (and best) hikes.
