For nature lovers, the North Star State has got to be one of the best places in the United States to explore. Not only do we have more than 10,000 lakes to discover. But Minnesota is also home to millions of acres of forests, thousands of miles of rivers, dozens of rushing waterfalls, and plenty of rugged cliffs. And these are just the state's most well-known landscapes. If you look a little closer, you'll find unusual spots like the place we'd like to introduce today. The little-known Sax Zim Bog is one of the most unique places to visit in northern Minnesota. It's full of peace and quiet, beauty, and plenty of opportunity for birdwatching. Here's what you need to know about this spot:
Sax-Zim Bog is a large nature area in northern Minnesota, about an hour northwest of Duluth. If you're a nature lover - and especially if you're a birdwatcher - you'll want to pay this place a visit.
There are two bog boardwalks that allow visitors to hike through the area, which is made up not just of bog, but of rivers, lakes, aspen forest, and other habitats that draw many animals.
As you walk the boardwalks, you'll encounter a beautiful landscape with plenty of peace and quiet to be found. There's a little more action along the bog's main road, where many visitors hang out to see the birds perched in the nearby trees.
No matter where you spend most of your time, you're bound to see some interesting wildlife. In warmer months, unique wildflowers and mushrooms dot the ground.
And throughout the year, many animals pass through Sax-Zim. Large mammals such as deer and wolves are known to roam here.
Birdwatchers love Sax-Zim because of the many bird species that pass through the area. Depending on the season, there are many birds to be seen here.
Some birds, such as the great gray owl, the pine grosbeak, and more winter here. They're commonly spotted between December and February.
In warmer months, you'll also find plenty of songbirds. Some migrant warblers are spotted in May, while others stick around to breed here throughout the summer. Sax-Zim Bog is full of fascinating bird life!
