The Parisian tradition of a couple expressing their love for each other by attaching a padlock to a bridge over a river - the Seine, in the case of Paris - isn't limited to France. In fact, you can find plenty of these love locks in Minnesota. One of the best - and most scenic - places to witness or participate in this phenomenon is Vermillion Falls Park in Hastings, MN.
Vermillion Falls Park is located along the Vermillion River in Hastings, where it nears its confluence with the Mississippi at Prairie Island.
As it rushes down to meet the larger river, the Vermillion passes through a cliff-lined gorge and drops 35 feet in a lovely waterfall - right in the middle of town!
In the park, a wide pedestrian bridge passes over the gorge so visitors can enjoy views of the falls.
Over the past several years, though, locks have appeared on the chain link fencing that lines the bridge.
You'll find these locks on both sides for the length of the span.
The padlocks at this park in Hastings emulate the romantic Parisian tradition of love locks on a bridge.
Some are shiny and engraved...
Others are a bit more... shall we say, "slapdash" - or perhaps, "of the moment."
Regardless, they all express a couple's love and commitment to one another. Isn't that sweet?
(I like owls, so this is my favorite of the locks, thus far.)

When you go to Hastings to see the love locks, be sure to make a reservation at Wiederholt's Supper Club. This historic eatery has been satisfying folks for nearly a century, and it's one of my favorite supper clubs in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Why not make a romantic night (or weekend) of it, and book this charming treehouse vacation rental (it has a hot tub...). There's nothing wrong with a weekend getaway in the charming river town of Hastings!
