The Midstate Trail is an epic hiking path that cuts right across the entire state of Massachusetts.
It passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in Central Massachusetts and offers truly amazing views.
The whole trail extends for about 95 miles from the Rhode Island border to the Wapack Trail in New Hampshire.
It’s easily accessible and close to large population centers, but still feels like an exceptionally wild and scenic footpath.
The trail passes through land in Douglas, Sutton, Oxford, Charlton, Spencer, Leicester, Oakham, Rutland, Barre, Hubbardston, Princeton, Westminster, Ashburnham, and Ashby.
Hikers can discover remarkable scenery in places like Wachusett Mountain and Mount Watatic, as well as plenty of interesting geological and historical features.
Redemption Rock is located along the trail. This boulder marks the spot where Mary Rowlandson was released by her native captors in 1676.
You’ll even stumble upon archaeological treasures and the ruins of old structures, such as this one in Douglas State Forest.
There are plenty of places to stop along the way, including campsites, fire pits and picnic areas.
Of course, you don’t have to hike the whole trail in one go. Part of the beauty of this path is that you can hop on and off wherever you like.
