Here’s what you need to know about Stockbridge Bowl, one of the best lakes in Massachusetts.
Formally known as Lake Mahkeenac, Stockbridge Bowl is a gorgeous body of water situated in the mountains above the village of Stockbridge. It’s surrounded by lush greenery and overlooked by Tanglewood, the renowned summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
This little mountain lake is hugged by the peaks of the Taconic Range to the west and north and the charming Berkshire Hills to the east. You can get an incredible view of the lake and the Housatonic River plain from Monument Mountain to the north. Locals love to head to Stockbridge Bowl for a swim or a quick boating excursion, and it’s obvious why.
The lake is the largest in the area and has a public beach and boat ramp accessible to all. You can often see kayakers, sailboats, and canoes plying the waters, as well as water skiers and fishermen. Swimming is perfectly safe, as the water is clean and clear. Families and visitors often spread a picnic blanket on the lawn surrounding the public beach for a chance to get out of the sand and enjoy the scenery.
The lake itself is a little under two miles long and about three-quarters of a mile wide. It’s fully open to the public and the perfect place to unwind in any season. You won’t regret visiting this dreamy lake in Massachusetts.
