Perhaps more than any other season, fall evokes all of the senses. The sight of foliage, the sound of crunching leaves, the feel of our coziest flannel, the smell of baking spices, and the taste of our favorite seasonal treats. If you're anything like us, you're probably craving those melt-in-your-mouth apple cider donuts that are ubiquitous this time of year. And while Maryland has plenty of them to offer, our favorites might just be the ones that come from Gaver Farm in Mt. Airy.

Established in 1978, Gaver Farm is a family-run business that incorporates sustainable practices, resulting in top-notch produce that's as flavorful as it is eco-friendly. The fall season runs from the very end of August until the first week in November, with a brief pause before the equally popular Christmas season.

Before the leaves fall, we'd recommend a trip to Gaver Farm for an afternoon of apple picking. Stop by on Fridays between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. or the weekend between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and you can hop on a hayride and take part in this seasonal tradition.

Varieties of apples that are available for picking include Blondee, Buckeye, Ultra Gold, Crimson Crisp, Empire, Evercrisp, Ludacrisp, Cameo, and Fuji. Plus, the trees are grown in such a way that ladders aren't actually required for picking. Short on time? Pre-picked apples are available to purchase from the Farm Market, which is open daily. If you are picking your own, you'll need to purchase a peck or half-bushel bag before heading out to the orchard.

No trip to Gaver Farm is complete without sampling one of their famous cider donuts. Available at the Farm Market, these treats are made fresh every single day. Some claim that they are the best in the state, in fact. While you're at the market, you can stock up on some other fall essentials, including pumpkins, homemade fudge, kettle corn, and local honey.

Of course, you'll probably want to order a dozen more hot donuts just to take home with you; seriously, they're that good.
