It doesn't take more than a trip outside to realize just how gorgeous life here can be. From the coast to the mountains, there's always something new just around the bend - even if you've been in Maine your entire life. That's why we love this particular overlook. Even if you've been here a hundred times, something new might catch your eye. The way the sun shines, the way the wind blows...it's worth seeing again and again. And, if you've never seen it? This view might just be one of the best in the state - and it doesn't require driving down any dirt roads to find.
In Western Maine, just off of Route 17 lies an expansive view over the Rangeley Lakes region.
The route to get here is almost as beautiful. Winding along Routes 17 and 4 as the roads wrap around Rangeley Lake, the beautiful byway follows the ridgeline of the mountains. It also travels through the gorgeous rolling hills and valleys of the area.
The term "Height of Land" actually refers to an area where two watersheds come together, but in this case it seems perfectly apropos to describe the view.
In addition to the views over the lake, there are tons of trees, flowers and wildlife to appreciate.
The view is accessible via the Appalachian Trail and, depending on the time of year, you might see thru-hikers crossing the road near here.
There's a parking right off the road, which means you can actually see this view without getting out of the car.
And, once you've seen it from above head down and explore the actual lake. You'll get the best of both worlds!
