When you think of Louisiana, waterfalls probably don't come to mind. While we are known for our many beautiful bayous, swamps, and marshes, unfortunately, waterfalls just aren't as often found around the Bayou State. Which makes this beautiful waterfall hiking trail all the more incredible, since it's not every day you'll get to hike to a gorgeous waterfall in Louisiana.
Formally known at the Sicily Island Hills Wildlife Management Area, the J.C. “Sonny” Gilbert Wildlife Management Area is a 7,500-acre natural oasis in Catahoula Parish.
Known for its rugged terrain and beautiful rolling hills, the hiking trails at this WMA are challenging, but easy enough for even the beginner hiker to take on.
There are several trails in the wildlife management area, each one more beautiful than the next.
The Rock Falls Trail is an easy trail that’s less than a mile long and has a stunning payoff…
...and that's the trail's namesake: Rock Falls.
One of many different waterfalls in this WMA, Rock Falls holds the distinction of being the tallest waterfall in the state. At 17 feet, that’s impressive for Louisiana!
To see the falls at their fullest, you'll want to visit after a rainfall.
Because there's nothing more relaxing than listening to the sounds of cascading water.
There are a few different waterfalls within the trail systems at this wildlife management area, so after you've seen the Rock Falls, set off to find St. Mary's Falls or the Sandy Bayou Waterfall.
Keep in mind that to legally gain access to a WMA, you’ll need a fishing or hunting license.
If you don’t have either of those, you’ll need a Wild Louisiana Stamp, which you can get here. For a one-day pass, it’s only $2 per person, which is a steal considering you could easily spend an entire day here and not see everything.
