When the seasons change and everything transforms from grey and brown to green and vibrant, our beautiful state really comes to life. The rolling hills shine emerald in the sun and our hiking trails are filled with blooming greenery and colorful flowers. There are many great spring hikes in Kentucky, but when things begin to bloom, you'll want to track down a trail that offers budding flowers and interesting foliage. The Gray's Arch Trail in Red River Gorge is a wonderful springtime hike in Kentucky, and it's also a beautiful spot to explore any other time of year.
Please Note: As with many trails, there are times when this trail is closed due to natural occurrences. Please always check its current status before planning a visit.
Gray's Arch is a magnificent natural arch in Red River Gorge and can be found along a popular loop trail within Daniel Boone National Forest.
The trail is about 3.5 miles long and is rated moderate. As you can see, there are some elevation changes and as with most trails in the Gorge, there are some rocky drop offs. Always exercise caution!
This trail is visited all year long, but we happen to be partial to spring and early summer. There seems to be green everywhere you look, including along the interesting rock and dirt formations.
And you may even see blooming flowers climbing those rocks!
Or small fields of them amongst the trees. This trail is mostly wooded, so there is a nice amount of shade on a warm day.
Before the trees completely fill out, there are also some incredible views of the surrounding hills, cliffs, and other trails.
And of course the arch itself is a highlight, especially when surrounded by greenery. The trail can be muddy in sections and it is popular on busy days, but this favorite hike in Kentucky is worth a visit.
We love hiking in Kentucky any season of the year, but it's especially refreshing when things are just starting to bloom. Hit the trails for a springtime hike in Kentucky and definitely consider a visit to Gray's Arch in Red River Gorge for an all-around great outdoor adventure. Have you hiked the Gray's Arch Trail?
