Iowa's Native American history is some of the most important history in the state. After all, Natives were here long before settlers came to the state, and their traditions are still found throughout the state today. One sacred Native American site has been preserved and protected, and you can visit it by taking a little known trail just north of Dubuque.
The Little Maquoketa River Mounds State Preserve can be found at 18602 Walking Way, Dubuque, IA 52001
This 41 acre site is full of walking trails, scenic overlooks of the river, and peaceful places to observe stunning Iowa nature.
You'll find a carefully constructed staircase that leads you to a sacred archaeological site.
At the top, you'll find a fenced off, 3 acre Native American burial ground.
Here you can look over 32 Native American burial mounds, dating from the years 700-1200 AD.
Take in the serenity at the top of the hill - hiking Little Maquoketa is a truly breathtaking experience.
These mounds were sacred ground to the native population, and the site was created with lots of input from local Native American tribes.
If you take the time to visit this little known preserve, you'll be able to see stunning natural beauty and pay respects to those who were here long before we could call ourselves Iowans.
