You know something? It's never a bad time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, especially when you live somewhere as downright magical as Indiana. No matter the season, you're sure to stumble upon countless delights, and right now we'd like to shine a spotlight on a certain waterfall hiking trail in Indiana that leads to somewhere breathtaking: Kokiwanee Falls, though the falls may or may not show up - depending on recent rainfall. Time your trek well, though, and you're in for an amazing treat!
It is difficult to overstate the pure majesty of the Kokiwanee Nature Preserve.
Built right up alongside a portion of the Salamonie River, you'll find more than just the one Kokiwanee Falls here - there is at least one other major waterfall in the area, and numerous smaller ones depending on recent rains.
The preserve is stunning year-round, with old-growth trees and plenty to appreciate with every season.
Embark upon the Kokiwanee Nature Preserve Trail to truly get a front-row seat to this amazing little place. It is breathtaking, and the hike is the best possible way to really enjoy it.
The main draw to the park is Kokiwanee Falls, which looks particularly amazing after a decent rain event (as well as pretty awesome when frozen).
It's much wider than it appears in photos by itself (more on that in a moment), and the sound of it echoes somewhat far from its actual location - so you'll hear it before you spot it.
Check out the width of the falls compared to adult hikers:
Of course, the ferocity of the falls varies, so do plan accordingly. Sometimes, it is a mere trickle, and others, it's a fierce cascade. We honestly love it in every phase, in every way - it's a joy to call ours.
As we mentioned, there's at least one other waterfall in the preserve, and some hikers have reported seeing up to four!
It all depends on recent precipitation, be it rain or snow runoff. No matter when you show up, though, you're guaranteed at least one thing: your breath will be taken away by just how pristine and beautiful this land is.
Indiana - and its waterfalls - never seems to get a good rap. People often overlook us in favor of coastal places.
...but honestly, they shouldn't, because Kokiwanee Nature Preserve is FAR from the only beautiful place in the Hoosier State. There are so many places in our little neck of the woods that are just as - and some even more - beautiful as this one, and we highly recommend visiting them all.
