When the temperature starts to climb, it's time to head for the hills to find a secluded swimming hole, like the one you'll discover at Bell Smith Springs in Illinois. This is a spot hidden away deep in the Shawnee National Forest, and you're going to want to lace up your hiking boots and find the glorious Bell Smith Springs swimming hole.
The Bell Smith Springs swimming hole is hidden away in the Shawnee National Forest, and you'll take a short hike through some beautiful terrain to get to it.
Start at the Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area, where you'll find several different trails that you can explore. The swimming hole can be found along the White Trail, one of the most fascinating Bell Smith Springs hiking trails.
The White Trail is just 1.2 miles out and back, and it's rated as moderate because there are some tricky obstacles. The hike is well worth your effort, though.
Along the way, you'll pass by massive boulders and under soaring cliffs.
You'll descend a steep stone staircase...
...and along Bay Creek. You'll find plenty of smaller little swimming holes as you go.
Devil's Backbone is so named because the huge boulders that rise up out of the water kind of look like vertebrae — if you tilt your head just right and use a little imagination. The pool is usually deep and filled with cold, clean water.
It's the perfect place for a dip to cool off on a hot summer day!
