Abandoned places are both beautiful and a little scary at the same time. It's cool to look at abandoned Illinois barns, homes, and businesses and think about what they were like in their prime. But then there are moments when the tiny hairs on the back of your neck stand up and remind you that you may not be alone. Here are ten abandoned places in Illinois that show us that time means nothing to Mother Nature:
1. This wind-blown barn in Adams County near Ursa, Illinois will soon become one with the earth.
All throughout Illinois farm country, you'll see old barns that have seen better days. Some are completely abandoned, others are clinging to life with their last gasp of breath.
2. The Armour Meat Packing Plant sits abandoned.
Armour & Company was founded in 1867 and was one of Chicago's leading meat packing companies. The East St. Louis, Illinois plant was shut down in 1959, and stood vacant for years until the whole complex was demolished in 2016.
3. Bachelor's Grove Cemetery has been overtaken.
Twenty-five miles outside of Chicago, you'll find this old cemetery from the 1840s with a long history of paranormal activity. There are well over 100 documented experiences. It is one of the most haunted places in Illinois!
4. Nature grows around the Nickel Plate Road Viaduct.
5. The elements have stripped down the Savanna Army Depot.
In the 1900s the US government purchased 13,000 acres of land for use as artillery testing grounds. It officially closed down in 2000 and has been abandoned ever since.
6. Not too much remains of this home in McClean County
7. Nothing creepy at all about this old pool...

Many abandoned places in Illinois are filled with history. Sadly much of that history fades with time, and the stories about these long-lost houses, barns, businesses, and structures dissipate into the wind just like the items themselves.
