Spring is the perfect time to explore our state's epic Hells Canyon before the temperature gets too hot. Luckily, there are all sorts of trails that are just waiting to be taken advantage of by Idaho adventurers. Specifically, the Snake River Trail is a seriously scenic hike that treats you to some of the most amazing canyon views. However, the trail ultimately leads you to the historic Kirkwood Ranch hiding in the canyon that is open to visitors as a museum in the daytime. This place is a unique insight into what canyon living looked like during the early 20th century, and it's a must-visit for hiking enthusiasts with a love for Idaho history.
Can you think of a better way to spend a day than hiking within the stunning Hells Canyon and ending up at a historic ranch? This is an incredible adventure that will blow you away. It all starts at Pittsburg Landing approximately 19 miles west of White Bird, Idaho.
From Pittsburg Landing, you'll hop on the Snake River National Recreation Trail. This is one of only two ways to access the hidden ranch in the canyon. The other option is to reach the historic site by boat via the Snake River.
The trail is well-traveled and easy to follow. You'll find all sorts of gems along the trail such as Native American pictographs and old homesteads from Idaho's early settlers. It feels like the canyon is just bursting with history.
After about six miles, you'll spot the historic Kirkwood Ranch. The sight of this historic place tucked away at the bottom of the canyon is a truly splendid sight to see.
The ranch consists of the original ranch house, bunk houses, and other buildings that were constructed during the 1930s. This place is meant to give you an idea of what ranching life looked like during Idaho's early days. This place is no longer a working ranch, but it's open to the public as a museum. Only in Idaho would you find a museum in the middle of nowhere like this!
You'll feel as if you've stepped back in time as you explore the ranch's many artifacts. You could spend hours gazing at all the photographs and learning about the history of Hells Canyon both before and after settlers came to the area.
Decorating the ranch's lawn are various pieces of old farming machinery. There's even an old blacksmith shop full of rusting old tools nearby! This place is such an amazing piece of history that's been incredibly well-preserved over the decades.
Don't forget to visit the original rancher before you leave. Mr. David Kirk was laid to rest nearby in a grave marked from 1916.
