Idaho is home to seven unique, nationally recognized wildlife refuges, and each one is worth visiting on its own. However, we think Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge is particularly worth seeking out for a variety of reasons. Located on the shores of Lake Walcott, this refuge boasts pristine natural beauty AND plenty of recreational opportunities. When you feel like taking in Idaho's glorious natural setting and creating unforgettable memories, this is a fantastic place to go.
Located on the Snake River Plain in south-central Idaho, Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge is an idyllic destination where natural beauty, wildlife, and recreation can be found in abundance.
Boasting 80-miles of shoreline around Lake Walcott, about half of the refuge's 20,699 acres is composed of open water and wetlands. For this reason, the area attracts all types of wildlife species from miles around.
During your visit, you're bound to spot some of the wildlife that calls this beautiful oasis home. From the river otters and minks that can be found along the lake's bays to the nesting birds and waterfowl that arrive seasonally, this place is a paradise for wildlife lovers!
Wildlife viewing is pristine at Minidoka but the refuge also boasts plenty of recreational opportunities and activities. Bank fishing in Lake Walcott is an especially popular pastime at the wildlife refuge and is allowed year round.
Of course, nothing beats paddling across the picturesque lake in a kayak or canoe. Alternatively, Lake Walcott State Park offers around five miles of paved hiking trails that are perfect for exploring this majestic landscape.
Visitors can explore the refuge on a self-guided tour or, for a more in-depth look at the natural world, a ranger-led program. By providing platforms, brochures, and viewing areas, there's no better place to escape the chaos of the real world and escape into Idaho's natural beauty.
When you feel like exploring a completely untouched landscape, a visit to a wildlife refuge is always a great way to go. Plan a field trip to Minidoka National Wildlife Refuge and treat yourself to an adventure in this beautiful oasis.
