The extraordinary Pend d'Oreille Bay Trail is one of Sandpoint's best-kept secrets. This lovely lakeside trail runs along the stunning shoreline of Idaho's largest lake, Lake Pend Oreille. It's a beautiful trail any time of year, but especially during the fall.
The trail is well-maintained and mostly flat, making it a great outing for families with small kiddos. Although the trail is less than two miles long, you could easily spend hours leisurely strolling along the trail and taking in the sights. In fact, the fantastic views will make you wish the trail could go on forever.
The trailhead for Pend d'Oreille Bay Trail is located just a couple blocks north of City Beach in Sandpoint. The trail runs alongside the lake all the way to the adjacent town of Ponderay, showing off some of the region's most incredible landscapes in the mean time.
On the trail you'll find yourself being led into wonderful wooded areas, picturesque beaches, and so much more. It's a sight to be witnessed all year long but it takes on an entirely different personality during fall. During this time of year, the region is shrouded in majestic fall colors. You'll feel like pinching yourself to make sure you're not dreaming!
On a nice day, you can expect to see the trail bustling with cyclists, joggers, and other hikers. After all, it's hard to resist the beauty this family-friendly trail has to offer.
Thanks to a group called Friends of Pend d'Oreille Bay Trail, the trail is always an absolute pleasure to traverse. The group actively works to expand access for the trail since it currently ends where private property begins. They also work to keep the trail nice and clean by providing bear-proof trash containers, dog clean-up stations, and regular trash patrols. Overall, the trail is an amazing example of what can occur when the community comes together.
