You'll feel like you are walking through a fall foliage wonderland when you tackle the beautiful Snowslide Lake Trail in the Payette National Forest.

There is something truly magical about the autumn months. And if you are like me, you wish it would last so much longer. That’s why, when the leaves start to change colors, you’ll see me heading outside, hoping to soak up every fall foliage view before it quickly fades away. We are blessed in Idaho to have many mesmerizing fall hikes including the Snowslide Lake Trail in the Payette National Forest. This is a 3.5-mile, out-and-back hike that is a bit challenging, but when you time your visit just right, it is like walking through a fall foliage wonderland.

Just a short drive from McCall, you will find the Snowslide Lake Trail. This hike is quite popular during the summer months but there’s nothing quite like the autumn when fall foliage is at its peak.

This isn’t a trail for a quick afternoon stroll outdoors. It will require a bit of preparation. The trail is only 3.5 miles but there are steep inclines that will take your breath away — hiking poles are strongly recommended. In total, you can expect to climb more than 1,300 feet in elevation and there are no switchbacks to make this climb a little easier. You’ll also want proper footwear for protection against the many loose rocks you'll encounter along your way.

However, despite the climbs you must make, there are plenty of areas where you can stop, catch your breath, and enjoy the views. The trail weaves you through the Payette Forest and you’ll be immersed in some of Idaho’s pure natural beauty.

Your final destination is Snowslide Lake and your first view of this body of water will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a painting. While you may be anxious to get to the water, I recommend stopping and admiring the beauty of the alpine lake from a distance. It’s absolutely stunning.

The lake itself isn’t large but it’s secluded and the trees and mountains will make you feel far away from the cares of the world. Many people love to try their luck fishing here but it’s also a great spot to reflect, ponder, and meditate.

Make sure to give yourself an adequate rest before you head back down the trail. The steep inclines and loose rocks make the return journey a bit slow and you must put safety first.

But this is one Idaho trail where it’s okay to take your time and admire the scenes around every turn. When tackling the Snowslide Lake Trail, it’s like walking through a fall foliage wonderland — it’s breathtaking.

There are several hiking trails in Idaho that I love. However, many other individuals love them as well. Because of the popularity of these trails, it’s not uncommon to arrive for a day of adventure and find the parking lot is completely full — early mornings are definitely the best time to explore these trails. Harrison Lake Trail in the Kaniksu National Forest in northern Idaho is one of these trails. It’s not too long and the views make the journey worth every step. But parking is limited and if tackling this trail on the weekend, you likely won’t find yourself alone on your journey.

The Harrison Lake Trail is a beautiful hike in northern Idaho, approximately 30 miles north of Sandpoint. It is recommended to have a high-clearance vehicle to reach the trailhead as portions of the road are quite rocky and uneven. We also suggest you begin your journey early in the morning as parking at the trailhead is limited and will fill up quickly. Timing your visit just right will save you from a parking headache.

The Harrison Lake Trail is an out-and-back hike that is approximately 4.5 miles. It’s not a very easy trail — it will challenge you physically. There are some steep inclines you must tackle and some portions of the trail are rocky and feature large roots. Watch your feet, wear sturdy shoes, and come prepared for an adventure.

This trail will take you through the beautiful Kaniksu National Forest. You’ll hike through thick shaded areas and even do a little rock scrambling as you go. Don’t be afraid to take breaks often as the mountain and forest views are inspiring. When you want to give up, the surrounding landscapes will motivate you to keep moving forward.

And you will certainly want to keep going to reach the serene Harrison Lake. This may be one of the most beautiful small lakes in the panhandle. It’s surrounded by forests and cliff walls. The mountains create quite a stunning backdrop.

The water is clear and will likely tempt you. However, this small lake can be quite chilly so proceed with caution.

Harrison Lake is a beautiful area and a great backpacking destination. Just make sure that no matter how long you plan to stay, you come prepared with bear spray and wear bear bells. This is bear country and you must always be alert and prepared for wildlife encounters.

Harrison Lake Trail is a wonderful summer destination but fall is also a picture-perfect time to visit when the leaves change colors. The vibrant reds and oranges mixed with the evergreen trees create a beautiful sight.

Harrison Lake Trail may be challenging but the payoff is worth the effort. As you explore and spend time near the lake, you’ll understand why we recommend arriving early in the day — everyone wants to enjoy this area in person.
