There’s no doubt about it: the Hawaiian Islands is easily one of the greatest hiking destinations in the country — and maybe even the world. With miles and miles of trails that ascend mountains, traverse ridgelines, and lead to breathtaking natural beauty, Hawaii is truly a hiker’s paradise. But not all trails are created equal, and this gem, though lesser-known, is one of our current favorites — especially if you want to escape into the forest for the afternoon.
Nestled near the famous Waimea Canyon State Park, Koke’e State Park is, in comparison, underrated and overlooked. The state park is home to stunning panoramic views, natural wonders, and plenty of hiking trails, but today, we’re taking a journey along the Berry Flat Trail.
Measuring in at approximately three miles and gaining only 200 feet in elevation, the Berry Flat Trail is an easy, breezy, and beautiful nature trail perfect for the entire family.
What the Berry Flat Trail lacks in distance and difficulty, it makes up for with stunning views: this moderately trafficked loop trail winds its way through an ethereal forest full of native and non-native trees.
As you make your way along the dirt path, look up to discover a one-of-a-kind canopy of redwood, ohia, lehua, eucalyptus, sugi pine, and koa trees.
You’ll enjoy the sights and smells of the wildflowers in the spring and summer, as well as stopping to check out the small berry patch along the route where you will discover every type of berry imaginable.
Want to prolong your adventure? The Berry Flat Trail meets up with several trails within the Kokee State Park trail system, so bring a map, watch for signs along the trail, and let the adventure begin.
If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing the landscapes from your favorite childhood storybooks for yourself, this fairytale forest is perfect. So, what are you waiting for? Lace up those hiking boots and embark on the ethereal and underrated Berry Flat Trail.
