This place is even more unique because it has several areas of old growth forest lying within its expansive boundaries. Let's take a look at what makes this wooded paradise so special.
Great Mountain Forest occupies more than 6,000 acres of forestland in Norfolk and Canaan in the northwestern part of our state.
Walk the trails through the wooded utopia. The canopy overhead will keep your journey cool and shaded as you explore the setting around you.
Colorful splashes of wildflowers will accent your journey during certain times of the year. You'll often see birds and butterflies soaring around.
You'll come across trees like this old twisted black birch that have been around for hundreds of years. The trees are like interesting natural sculptures just waiting to be seen.
You will want to visit the several undisturbed gorgeous ponds and rivers within the forest borders. You can also see other eye-catching sights such as babbling brooks, small waterfalls, and swamps. You will want to bring your camera to take as many pictures as you can.
During the spring and summer, when the flowers emerge in bloom, the forest comes alive with color.
Even the ponds showcase stunning water plants that float on the surface showing off their beauty. And you might hear frogs croaking or splashing in the distance.
And if you just want to enjoy the solitude of this magnificent place, you can sit on a bench near the fern-carpeted floor and take in the sights and sounds around you.
