The Upper Natural Bridges Trail in Vallecito is a two-mile trek to one of Northern California's dreamiest swimming holes. Open year-round and easy to find, it's an adventure that should definitely be on your radar.
A beloved adventure for many Calaveras County residents, the hike itself is definitely a beauty. However, it's the limestone cave at the end that people really come for. Coyote Creek flows right through it before feeding into New Melones Lake, creating the most magnificent place for a swim.
You'll find the trailhead just off of Parrotts Ferry Road, marked by a sign that says "Natural Bridges Day Use Area." The two-mile out-and-back trail is rated as easy, making it a popular option for families with kids and casual hikers.
The cave at the end may be the main attraction, but don't forget to soak up the wonderful views along the way. As you head down the trail, you'll be treated to awesome canyon scenery while you follow the babbling creek.
Once you reach the end of the brief trail, you'll be in total awe of the sight before you. The limestone cave is magnificent. The creek flows right through it, creating the natural bridge for which the area is named.
On a hot summer day, you'll likely see a lot of people enjoying the creek's refreshing waters. Some people even opt to tube or paddleboard all the way through the cave! This is best done during the wet season when the current is strong enough.
