This one, known as Hole-in-the-Wall Beach, is only accessible via a unique little rock arch. Located between the towns of Santa Cruz and Davenport is a popular beach called Panther Beach. This sandy oasis is an excellent place to soak up the coast's beauty, but if you look a little harder, you'll find another beach hiding within the outcroppings.
Known as Hole-in-the-Wall Beach, this secluded beach can only be found by walking through a unique rock formation that extends into the surf. The formation literally looks like "a hole in the wall", hence the name.
You'll find the entrance to this hidden beach by walking south along Panther Beach. Accessing Hole-in-the-Wall Beach is considered easiest at low or medium tides, but it's possible at high tide if you don't mind getting wet. Of course, use caution and avoid the area when the tides are really high.
Beyond the arch, the beach takes on an especially secluded atmosphere. It's a great spot to lay out, enjoy a picnic, read a book, or simply take in the view. Swimming is NOT recommended, as this section of the coast is known for its dangerous conditions, including rip currents and cold water.
Surrounded by large sandstone cliffs, this beach is the perfect representation of Northern California's coastal beauty. You could definitely lose track of time taking it all in. Just be sure to time your visit accordingly so you can get back out of the hole before tides go up!
Parking is free at Panther Beach. You'll find the parking lot located right off Highway 1, just 1.5-miles south of Davenport. The area is pretty unassuming, so keep an eye out! The trail down to the beach is also pretty steep and prone to erosion, so good shoes are recommended for the trek.

Whether you choose to drive, hike, or bike to Jackson Lake, you’ll find a lesser-known fall wonderland and a gorgeous spot to enjoy a seasonal picnic. The landscape surrounding the small lake puts on a simply beautiful display this time of year and it is less than two hours from Los Angeles. There are also great camping spots near the lake so you can revel in the fall beauty a little longer.

Need To Know: There is no fee to visit the lake. Mid to late-October usually has the most vibrant foliage.
Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is a secluded hidden gem. You can follow a 5-mile loop around the lake’s shoreline and even bring your fur-baby along for the adventure. The scenic Green Valley Lake Road has even been compared to Vermont in the fall!

In an otherwise arid canyon in the Sespe Wilderness is a wild creek and natural hot springs. Lavender festivals are a beautiful summer tradition, but at the end of summer and well into the fall, this lavender farm hosts the enchanting Lavender Nights. The fragrant purple blooms are long gone but the fields and trees become a magical wonderland illuminated by nearly half a million twinkling lights. Stroll through the rows of lavender and the century-old olive grove. There are lawn games, gorgeous photo opportunities, lavender-infused beverages and sweets, and delicious organic dinner items at the food court and bar - plus a delightful marketplace to shop for unique goods. The atmosphere is complimented by live musical performances every night.
The annual JazzTrax Festival is a spectacular reason to escape to Catalina Island for a weekend. A total of 30 smooth jazz stars will grace the stage of the magnificent ballroom at the Avalon Casino over the course of two weekends in October - a tradition that has continued since 1987. Whichever weekend you attend, consider arriving in time for Thursday’s Unplugged Under the Stars at the Descanso Beach Club. Visiting one of our beautiful botanical gardens is an excellent way to soak in some vibrant fall color, and one of our absolute favorites is Descanso Gardens. Many of the trees change colors with the cooler weather - especially later in the season - and the gardens are populated with beautiful birds, butterflies, turtles, Mallard ducks, lizards, cottontail rabbits, and adorable mule deer. There are many seasonal flowers blooming in fall as well, adding to the color. Admission tickets are quite reasonable ($15 for adults at the time of writing) and Descanso Gardens offers Free Tuesday tickets for the third Tuesday of every month.
