Endless adventure can be found at Lava Beds National Monument, like the hike to Schonchin Butte Fire Lookout. This short, beauty-packed hike leaves an impression!
This family-friendly hike takes you up a cinder cone to a historic, functioning fire lookout tower where you can enjoy a full panoramic view of the landscape below. Located in the middle of the park, you'll follow the signs to the trailhead. It's fairly obvious where to go since the butte is so visible from around the park.
From the parking lot, you'll set off on a well-marked, dirt trail. The hike is a bit steep with a few switchbacks that zig-zag up the hill. The trail has a total elevation gain of 465-feet - a nice and easy leg workout!
The fire lookout tower is at the very top of the hill. Near the top, you'll climb steps that have been dug into the hill to reach the lookout. Since it's a functioning fire lookout, you may have some company in the tower. The building is staffed every summer afternoon by a member of the fire management crew.
The Schonchin Butte Lookout has been watching over the Lava Beds landscape since 1941. Lookouts used to actually live inside of the facility, but no longer. Today, lookouts make the hike up the butte each summer day to watch for smoke.
Gazing out from the tower's outdoor deck, you can see how easy it would be to spot a fire from so high above. The view seems to go on forever! You may even see Mt. Shasta in the distance if the sky is clear enough.
This fire lookout hike is a must when exploring the rugged, otherworldly Lava Beds National Monument. See the trail map here and start planning your adventure!
