Introverts, rejoice! This list is specifically for you. While the hustle and bustle of downtown Buffalo is great for gatherings, festivals, and people watching, it can also be a bit draining for people who like to keep to themselves. For those of us who enjoy some quality "me-time" in the peace and quiet, here are twelve perfect places in Buffalo to escape crowds:
1. Albright Knox - 1285 Elmwood Avenue
The Albright-Knox art gallery is a popular spot, but it rarely ever gets busy to the point of gathering crowds – probably because there's so much room to spread out inside! Take a breather from the daily grind and enjoy the impressive works inside the gallery, or sit in peaceful serenity on the steps outdoors. The AK Cafe is also one of the best kept secrets in Buffalo!
2. Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens – 2655 South Park Avenue
Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens is one of the most relaxing places in the city. It can certainly get busy during special events and tour times, but chances are you will have plenty of room to roam on your visit. Sit beside peaceful waterfall fixtures while you stop and smell the tropical flowers that adorn the gardens!
3. Buffalo & Erie County Public Library – 1 Lafayette Square
Is there a better place for an introvert to enjoy than a library? I think not. The Buffalo Public Library is massive, with shelves upon shelves of books to read and artifacts to see. There's even a cafe inside so you can grab a latte or a light to lunch to savor while you're nose-deep in your favorite novel.
4. Burchfield Penney Art Center – 1300 Elmwood Avenue
Burchfield Penney is another great art center to explore when you need some space. BP features local artists and world-famous works in a light and open setting. You can truly get away from it all while you enjoy the exhibits and appreciate the talents of our local art community!
5. Chestnut Ridge Park – 6121 Chestnut Ridge Road, Orchard Park
You don't need to lace up your hiking boots to enjoy all that Chestnut Ridge has to offer! A slow stroll through the park's paved roads are enough to satisfy your crowd-free cravings. Get your steps in and take in the scenery while you enjoy the peace and quiet.
6. Delaware Park & Hoyt Lake – Meadow Drive
Delaware Park is another popular spot that rarely ever gathers a true crowd. Wander the paths, watch boaters on the lake, and soak up some rays on a sunny day from one of the park's benches. Can't you almost feel the peaceful vibes already?
7. Dog Ears Cafe & Bookstore – 688 Abbott Road
Dog Ears Bookstore is a hidden gem for bibliophiles and introverts in Buffalo. Grab a coffee or pastry from the cafe and enjoy a book while you appreciate the small town feel of this quaint bookstore.
8. Public Espresso – 391 Washington Street
Public Espresso is one of the most popular coffee spots in Buffalo, and for good reason. While their coffee is truly delicious, the lounge in the lobby of Hotel Lafayette is also one of the best places to relax downtown. Between the plush leather seats, dim lights, and expertly-crafted beverages, you'll want to stay all day!
9. Tifft Nature Preserve – 1200 Fuhrmann Boulevard
If you enjoy being one with nature (and without other people), Tifft is the place to be! The preserve is home to many different species of wildlife and several boardwalks and walkways to stroll. The only crowd you'll run into here is a crowd of whitetail deer, if you're lucky!
10. Times Beach Nature Preserve – Coast Guard Station S Road
Times Beach is located right outside the city on the shores of Lake Erie, making it a beautiful spot for a quiet walk. Plus, there's a stunning backdrop at Times Beach for your inner photographer to enjoy!
11. Wilkeson Pointe – 225 Fuhrmann Boulevard
If you're on Instagram, chances are you've seen photos of the structures atop Wilkeson Pointe. If you're not a fan of crowds, head to Wilkeson to see them for yourself!
12. WNY Book Arts Center – 468 Washington Street
If you need a break from it all but don't have a lot of time to spend, wander in or window shop at WNY Book Arts Center. Located in the heart of downtown on Washington Street, WNY Book Arts Center is a great spot for some solace in the city – not to mention a favorite place to pick up unique gift items!
