It's not every day you get to witness amazing natural beauty up close and personal. While Buffalo is located close to some of the world's most impressive waterfalls, we're focusing our attention on a smaller — yet just as awe-inspiring — natural phenomenon. The Eternal Flame Falls is one of the most enchanting places near Buffalo. Here's why it deserves a spot on your Buffalo bucket list.
The Eternal Flame is located within Chestnut Ridge Park.
You can find the trail head just beyond the intersection of Seufort Road and Route 277.
Like anything worthwhile, it takes a bit of work to get to this enchanting destination.
While the terrain is easily manageable in dry weather, rain and snow can make things a bit more difficult. You might want to check the forecast and take note of the weather leading up to your visit if you plan on hiking with your family.
We promise the physical work is worth the reward!
The Eternal Flame is located on what is known as the Shale Creek Preserve. Follow the signs on the trail to get down to the falls. You'll be able to smell the natural gas when you get close!
It's no Niagara Falls, but don't discredit this place.
The waterfall itself sometimes takes second place to the flame, but don't overlook the natural beauty of this spot.
Okay... so how does this all work?
The Eternal Flame is caused by fissures in the creek bed which allows for natural gas to escape.
While there are several fissures in the waterfall area, only the Eternal Flame can be lit.
Peek towards the right side of the falls as you approach for a glimpse of the flame!
The Eternal Flame falls is a bit deceiving, however...
Despite its name, the Eternal Flame isn't exactly eternal. Sometimes the spark does go out. In case of a lack of flame during your hike, it might be a safe bet to bring a long lighter along for your trek!
Plan your journey: The trail to Eternal Flame Falls is 1.5 miles round-trip.
This is a great afternoon hike for most skill levels. One of the best parts of this enchanting place? It's beautiful year-round! Each season has something new to offer in terms of picturesque views.
