Alaska has some amazingly stunning scenery.
Every spot of the state offers wild beauty all year round. In the autumn, the Lion’s Head Trail offers amazing foliage scenes with the awe-inspiring Matanuska Glacier as your view when you reach the top!
Located off of the Glenn Highway is a stunning hike that brings you to the top of Lion’s Head.
This trail gives you amazing views of Matanuska River, Matanuska Glacier, and the surrounding mountain range. There are incredible views from the entire trip up.
The trail will take you out and back, for a total of 2.1 miles.
The entire elevation gain is moderate, coming in at only 990 feet. It will feel steep, as the gain is over a mile, but it’s short and sweet.
The views are worth each step of the way.
And if you time it right, you’ll see the leaves change all over the valley. Depending on the time of year, you may encounter some snow and rocks, so bring gear appropriate for all types of weather.

Many people say this is the best view of Matanuska Glacier that you can find if you’re not in the air.
The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. The hike shouldn’t take too long, but make sure to budget some time at the top to soak in the sights you’ll see.
When you reach the big gravel parking area, there’s a sign that says “No trespassing.”
You’ll see a gate and a sign for AT&T. Call the number on the sign to let them know you’ll be hiking up for permission to get out on the trail, and they’ll let you right in.
This hike is an unbelievable way to explore Alaska.
This is a wonderful way to spend the perfect weekend. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it!
